Back on November 17th I wrote a blog about EU Privacy Legislation, and in that blog I referred to a new law that had passed that required consumers to 'opt-in' before any cookies could be placed on their browser.
On December 10th, ClickZ reported that the setting on a consumers browser seem to fit the law passed in the EU directive. (Click here to check out that story)
A section of the law states:
"Where it is technically possible and effective, in accordance with the relevant provisions of [the Data Protection Directive], the user's consent to processing may be expressed by using the appropriate settings of a browser or other application."
The IAB looks at his language as proof that the browser settings satisfy this requirement. Over the next year it will be interesting to see how the various bodies of the EU view this language, because ultimately how the law is interpreted is completely up to them.
More information to come as this continues to develop overseas!
